Istanbul Districts “Kartal”
Kartal district is located on the Asian side south-eastern part of Istanbul with a total land area of 38.54 km2 and a long coastline along the Sea of Marmara, between Maltepe and Pendik. The population of the district is around 500,000 people.
Kartal is an incredibly old settlement. It was inhabited by Greek fishermen and founded as a small fishing town along the coastline. Its importance for Byzantine was due to its convenient location by the sea.
Kartal’s transformation from a small village to an important location dates back to the 1850s. the development of Kartal speeded up after the first ferry port built in 1857, then later the first : Haydarpaşa-Pendik line, built in 1873.
Currently, Kartal area has easy access to all the main transportation facilities, i.e. sea-bus, Marmaray metro line and is home to many schools, universities, hospitals, and shopping malls.
Being a quiet and secure district where families with children prefer to live in, it responds almost all the needs of inhabitants: walks, cycling, fine food and fish restaurants, nice drinks at cafes with sea view. Dragos shore is famous for having one of the most beautiful views of the Prince Islands. And Aydos Forest is another recreation area that takes part in the district.
Kartal is one of the biggest districts of the Anatolian side of Istanbul, close to the Financial Center Currently being built on the Asian side, is fast moving towards becoming the most important business center and culture-art center.
